State government on Tuesday declared that admission to the 10 per cent management quota seats in seven Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society colleges will be done through Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET). Earlier, these seats were going to be filled through NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). There are 105 seats that come under management quota in these self-financed colleges.
The change in admission criteria also means that the annual fee would be close to Rs 3 lakh per student instead of Rs 8.5 lakh. Dr. Parthiv Shah, President of the Gujarat Parents Association said, "We had met State Health Minister Shankar Chaudhary a week ago with our demands and we are thankful to the government for hearing our plea and making the change. This is an extremely beneficial decision for meritorious students of Gujarat Board and 105 more seats will give them a huge opportunity." The Mirror had earlier reported about how the Gujarat Parents Association which comprises of more than 300 members had appealed to the state government that the admission for the management quota seats should be done through GUJCET. The parents had contended that NEET will give nonmeritorious students an undue advan tage as it takes only 20 per cent to qualify through NEET while it takes 50 per cent to qualify through GUJCET.
MEDICAL ADMISSIONS POSTPONED
Meanwhile, the admission process to medical, dental and paramedical courses have been postponed till further orders. According to sources, the members of the Admission Committee for Professional Medical Educational Courses (ACPMEC) said it will take a final decision on the admission process only after it receives a definitive order from the state government. Anotification on the official website of the admission committee - www.medadmbjmc.in reads, "Admission process of the ACPMEC has been postponed till further notice." There are a total of 12,345 seats in medical, paramedical and dental colleges across the state. Of these, 3,330 are MBBS seats in six government and 14 self-financed medical colleges. SC will hear the state government's appeal against HC's order quashing the EBC quota on September 11.
DR S R KULKARNI APPOINTED VC OF SP UNIVERSITY
The state government on Tuesday appointed Dr S R Kulkarni as new vice chancellor of Sardar Patel University, Anand. With 33 years of experience in education sector, Dr Kulkarni was attached to RSS-affiliated student organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad from 1981to 2014. Kulkarni is in-charge head of Department of Accounting and Financial Management at MS University in Vadodara. The government had recommended his name to the Governor who cleared his appointment to the top post. He succeeds Dr Harish Padh, whose term ended on July 30.
