UPSC 2014 Exam Result: Four Women Declared Top Rank Holders

Four women are the top rank holders for the Union Public Service Commission exam results that were declared here on Saturday. The topper is one Ira Singhal. Three others — Renu Raj, Nidhi Gupta and Vandana Rao — are the next in line. Suharsha Bhagat, with the fifth rank, is the top male candidate in the list.

Singhal, who is specially-abled, competed in the general category and topped the exam.

"I am really very happy. I can't believe this. I just prepared for the examination," Singhal told PTI. "I want to be an IAS officer. I want to do something for the benefit of physically-handicapped people," she said.

Singhal and Gupta are both from Delhi, and are officers with the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise). Raj is meanwhile a doctor from Kerala. This was her first attempt. "I am extremely happy to know the result. I have been preparing for the exam for the last one year," she told PTI from Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile Gupta, who is presently Assistant Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, said, "It is really a proud moment. I put in lot of hard work and finally it paid."

Around 1,236 posts will be filled from the 9.45 lakh candidates who had applied for the prestigious civil services examination. The three-stage process first saw 4.51 lakh students appearing for the preliminary examination conducted in August 24 last year across the country. While 16,933 of them qualified for the main examination held in December last year 3,308 candidates were chosen for the personality test that concluded on June 30.

This is the first time that the Commission declared the final results within four days of the closing date for the personality tests.

"In terms of the number of candidates and number of centres or sub-centres, this was the biggest examination ever conducted by the Commission," a senior official said.

Among the 1,236 candidates recommended for posting, 590 are from the general category, while 354 belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 194 from Scheduled Castes and 98 from Scheduled Tribes.
